Chanel Johnson from Southfield was crowned Miss Michigan USA 2020 on 21st September 2019 at McMorran Theater. She succeeds Miss Michigan USA 2019 Alyse Madej.

Chanel is a probation officer for Oakland County, graduating from Wayne State University with a bachelor’s in criminal justice in 2017. According to Chanel coronation ceremony Miss Michigan USA 2020 was extra special for her because not only she won it but was handed flowers by Carole Gist, the first black Miss USA.

On prepping up for Miss USA 2020, Johnson says it’ll be her versatility and ability to connect and empathize with people that’ll guide her and help her to stand out in the crowd of beauties. Chanel feels that representing a state does require a lot of courage but most importantly it requires a lot dedication.

Chanel also shared that her routine for the competition is going to change from the last competition but it’s not about being skinny but being healthy and carry yourself confidently. In the past people thought of it to be where you must look like a supermodel but you don’t. You must be you.

Johnson contends that her experience so far has been beneficial one during which she has made friends, gained confidence and learned lessons. “I think that pageants are one of the most positive things that a young woman can get into if she’s looking to build her confidence”
