04 May 2021 | Priya Bhardwaj

The 69th edition of Miss Universe i.e., Miss Universe 2020, is all set to be held on 16th May 2021 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, United States where Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa will crown her successor at the end of the event finale.

Almost twenty countries have withdrawn participation from the 69th edition due to travel restrictions and other related reasons to covid-19. On the other hand, the 2020 edition will see the debut of Cameroon, and the returns of Ghana and Russia, which had both not competed since 2018.

Here’s everything you need to know about the debuting and returning countries at Miss Universe 2020 –

Cameroon making its debut under Angèle Kossinda’s delegation

The organization of Miss Universe Cameroon announced Angèle Kossinda as the first and official Miss Universe Cameroon 2020 in March as she is ready to represent Cameroon at Miss Universe 2020. Angele is 28-years-old and stands 175 cm tall and hails from Far North region of Cameroon.

Angèle has earned her bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance and a master’s degree in Finance Management. Not new to the world of beauty pageant, she has previously competed in Miss Earth 2017 where she was placed at Top 16. She later represented the country at Miss International 2019 and Miss Supranational 2019 where she was highly appreciated for her performance.

Ghana making its return under Chelsea Tayui’s delegation

Chelsea Tayui was crowned Miss Universe Ghana 2020 at the Labadi Beach Hotel in September last year. Chelsea is a communications executive and had been working with an NGO before Miss Universe. She hails from Keta in the Volta Region. Chelsea would use the platform to incite in young girls the spirit of self-trust and the exceptional ability to believe in themselves to take on the universe as future leaders.

Ghana could not send a delegate to the 2019 edition as the national competition was temporarily suspended and could only begin operations in 2020. In 2018, Miss Universe Ghana 2018 Akpene Diata Hoggar represented her country at Miss Universe 2018 but could not place in the Top 20. The country is yet to pioneer its win at Miss Universe.

Russia making its return under Alina Sanko’s delegation

Alina Sanko is all set to represent Russia at Miss Universe 2020 after the country is making a return to the pageant after 2018. Alina Sanko, who was crowned Miss Russia 2019, was originally going to represent Russia both at Miss Universe and Miss World 2019, but was unable to do so due to overlapping dates.

The Miss Russia organization was unable to finalize replacement plans for Miss Universe due to the length of time it took for the Miss Universe Organization to publish details about its date and venue, which would have made it difficult for the Russian entrant to receive an American visa.
