03 Nov 2021 | Angelique Reyes

The Miss Universe Nepal organization hosted the 2nd edition of the national pageant, Miss Universe Nepal 2021 on 30th October 2021 at Hotel Yak and Yeti, Kathmandu, where aspiring delegates from all over the country will compete against each other for the title and an opportunity to represent Nepal at Miss Universe 2021. At the end of the event Sujita Basnet was crowned as the new queen as she succeeded Miss Universe Nepal 2020 Anshika Sharma for the title.

Since this was her last year in the pageant industry due to her age, 28 years-old Sujita took a last big step before she retires as she entered the national pageant. Along with her own dreams, she hopes to inspire the dreams of individuals across the nation through her initiative ‘Liberated’, an organization dedicated to empower women who are socially and financially bound from reaching their potential.

Not new to pageantry, Sujita became the first ever Miss Nepal USA in 2011. In 2016, she was awarded the title of Miss Maryland World 2016 and went onto represent Maryland in Miss World America 2016 where she placed in the Top 12. After that, she placed as the second runner-up at Miss Maryland USA 2020, one of the biggest titles for a Nepali diva to get. She was also the Popular Choice award winner at the competition.

After being crowned as the new queen, she expressed her feelings in a heartfelt post as she wrote, “The naive girl from 10 years ago is looking at a Miss Universe Nepal today, dreams DO COME TRUE! But these dreams don’t turn into reality without the backing of angels and I want to thank all the angels that have been a part of this journey with me!”

Even though she was not born in Nepal, Sujita has made multiple visits to Nepal as she is a volunteer for several NGOs in the country. Being a part of so many pageants has helped Sujita build her self-esteem, confidence, awareness, and gave her a voice to be herself. Sujita has the experience and the maturity to represent Nepal with elegance and grace.

Our heartiest congratulations to the newly crowned queen!
