Olga Mercedes Álava Vargas was 22-years-old when she vied for the crown of Miss Earth 2011 representing Ecuador. She stepped into pageantry with vying for the crown of Reina de Guayaquil and ended up winning the title. In 2011, after securing the third position in Miss Ecuador 2011 which titled her as Miss Earth Ecuador 2011, she got the opportunity to represent Ecuador in Miss Earth 2011. With her outstanding performance throughout the competition, she was crowned as winner and succeeded Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria. During her reign as Miss Earth 2011, she traveled to various countries including Philippines, China, France, United States, Taiwan, Guam, Qatar, Thailand, Réunion Island in Africa, India and Sri Lanka to spread environmental awareness.
