Miss Universe 1999 was won by MpuleKeneilweKwelagobe of Botswana on the finale ceremony of the 48th edition, which was held on 26 May 1999 at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago. Wendy Fitzwilliam of the host country passed on her crown during the event. Kwelagobe was the first woman to win from a debutant nation. She is a politician and businesswoman in Botswana, and has gained fame as a human health rights activist. She has advocated for HIV/AIDS as well as for the youth to have better access to sexual reproductive education.
