Stefanía Fernández Krupij from Venezuela defeated 84 other contestants at the finale of Miss Universe 2009, to clinch the coveted title. The beauty queen has a Guinness record for being the first Miss Universe winner to be crowned by a compatriot, the Miss Universe 2009 Dayana Mendoza. The 58th coronation gala took place on 23 August at the Imperial Ballroom in Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas. The 26 year old Venezuelan TV Host and model, has also been a part of the "Your Voice is Your Power" campaign which denounced violence, human rights violations, and censorship of Venezuelan media.
