Indonesia debut at Miss Universe in 1974 with Nia Kurniasi Ardikoesoema. However, between its debut until 2005, Indonesia only participated in nine editions. In 2005, Indonesia returned with a Top 15 placement Artika Sari Devi. The golden period of Indonesia began in 2013 as the country placed in every edition through 2020 except 2017.

Indonesia withdrew from Miss Universe in 2021 due to no diplomatic ties with the host country.
For the 2022 edition, Laksmi Shari De Neefe Suardana is representing her country. Laksmi De-Neefe Suardana was crowned Puteri Indonesia 2022/Miss Universe Indonesia 2022 at the finale hosted on 27th May 2022. Laksmi is the first representative from Bali to ever be crowned Puteri Indonesia.
Laksmi earned her Diploma of Arts from Monash College in 2013. She then received her double degree program, Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design from RMIT University in Australia and Bachelor of Business in Fashion Business from Polimoda in Italy and graduated with cum laude. This was Laksmi’s first national pageant and won as well. Being a strong, beautiful and talent diva, Laksmi will surely be a strong contender for the international crown.
