Miss Earth 2002 Winfred Omwakwe from Kenya

Winfred Adah Omwakwe was the official delegate of Kenya for the crown of Miss Earth 2002. She made her debut in pageantry with vying for the crown of Miss Tourism World Kenya 2002 where she ended up winning the title of Miss Earth Kenya 2002. She then, at 21 years of age, competed in Miss Earth 2002 and was titled as the first runner up at the end of the competition. On 28th May 2003, Winfred took over the crown of Miss Earth 2002 which was earlier won by Džejla Glavović of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Glavović, unfortunately, could not fulfil her duties as Miss Earth 2002 which resulted in her losing the crown and title of Miss Earth 2002. Omwakwe was only 10 years old when her father passed away and two years after his death, at the age of 12, she lost her mother as well. Being the youngest of her three siblings, she was taken care of by her elder brother and sister who are lawyers by profession. Hailing from Nairobi, Winfred did her master’s degree in public relations from the International University of Monaco. She was among the finalists of Miss Universe Kenya but unfortunately could not make her way to the crown. "I was stunned and couldn’t believe it. But then I saw the congratulatory messages in my e-mail and I received calls from all over. That’s when I was convinced it wasn’t a hoax.", Said Winfred, sharing her reaction on getting the news of being the new Miss Earth 2002.
